What is Kenpo Karate?
Kenpo Karate is a modern and practical form of unarmed combat and self-defense
which employs the usage of the body’s natural weapons to quickly and effectively
overcome one or multiple assailants. The Mitchell System of Kenpo Karate
organizes the components of this dynamic Martial Art – basics, techniques, forms,
and sets, into an easy-to-learn and comprehensive curriculum that encourages
students to tailor techniques to their abilities and develop their own style through
the study of natural motion.
About Jim Mitchell and the Mitchell System of Kenpo Karate
The Mitchell System is a culmination of many years of studies and teaching
experience. Founder, Master Jim Mitchell is a first generation black belt and
personal protégé of the late Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker, the undisputed
“Father of American Karate.”
Master Mitchell managed Ed Parker’s headquarters school in Pasadena, California,
from 1975 to 1978. He then moved to San Diego where he was the District
Manager of six Ed Parker studios. He continued his training with Mr. Parker on a
regular basis, and was the only student Mr. Parker trained privately, in his home,
every week for over a ten-year period.
Since Mr. Parker passed away in December of 1990, Master Mitchell has continued
to refine and update the System based on the concepts and principles of creativity
gained from Mr. Parker, as he had never intended for it to be “trapped in tradition,”
and always advocated change and improvement. What is taught today in Master
Mitchell’s clubs and schools is what we now know as the, “Mitchell System.”
